Cristina interviews Virginia Sole-Smith about her newest book, Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture; where she explores the impact the “war on childhood obesity” has caused kids of all ages to absorb a daily onslaught of body shame. She offers research-based strategies to help parents name and navigate the anti-fat bias that infiltrates our schools, doctor’s offices and family dinner tables. Today, she and I are diving the book together and discussing how this system starts at beginning of parenthood, the expectations and guilt parents feel when their children don’t meet medical body size guidelines, where fatphobia is seen the most, and ultimately researched-backed approaches to what you can do to empower your children to own their relationship with food and their body.
