Park City Gluten Free Eats | Real Food with Dana

We’re nearing the end of ski season this year so I wanted to recap my Park City ski trip for you guys! Also already bought a pass for multiple mountains for next year, so this list will definitely be getting a lot of use going forward. I’ve been out to Park City for ski trips four times now (plus once in the summer for a conference) and have been feasting at Park City gluten free – friendly places for just as long. Not saying I’m an expert, but definitely saying I’ve been there enough times to know where the good grub (and ski spots!) are.

Harvest Café Park City

Holy Moly. Been here three times over two trips now, and it has always far exceeded my expectations. Harvest is a cute little cafe at the end of the main street in Park City, and I’d highly recommend you make a stop here at some point for breakfast, lunch, or brunch on your trip. It’s an Australian, farm-to-table style concept in a small little restaurant that gets very crowded pretty much all the time, but it’s totally worth the wait. Almost all the dishes can be made gluten-free or vegan, too!

Favorite orders:

  • Smashed Avocado (avocado toast – emphasis on a massive amount of avocado) with poached eggs, add bacon!
  • Toasted paleo banana bread
  • Savory toast (sub GF bread with herb ricotta, sautéed mushrooms and spinach, fresh avocado and a poached egg)
  • Buddha Bowl of Goodness: Brown rice, butternut pumpkin puree, oven roasted tomatoes, fermented cabbage, pickled onions, hard boiled egg, herb ricotta, avocado, herb salad, seeds, and miso ginger dressing (GF as ordered)
  • Matcha latte with coconut milk
  • Golden milk latte with coconut milk

Vinto (Pizza & Pasta)

Loved this place! Highly recommend. Know that they don’t take reservations, but the wait is worth it! Gluten free pizza and pasta options 🙂 Great casual family style atmosphere, great wine and food, great servers, and the price is great! I had the Tutabella pizza (GF) the first time and on our next trip, the special chicken pesto pasta, which were both awesome. Family loved the chicken pesto and pasta with sausage. Finished with the dark chocolate sorbet, topped off with the optional (but DELICIOUS) extra virgin olive oil and grey sea salt. LOVE!

High West Saloon

Great place! BUT. Either get their early or be prepared to wait – it gets crowded fast! The first night we tried to go, the wait was about an hour and a half to two hours, so we came back the next night instead and had a great time and great food.

Cocktail recommendations:

  • Dead Man’s Boots – really strong! Highly recommend if you’re a whiskey person.
  • High West Lemonade (with vodka) – also strong, but great flavors! I’ve never had pomegranate in a drink before, and will definitely be trying to make this myself!

and for the food…

  • Sweet n Salty Snacks – with bacon, bourbon & cashew popcorn (LOTS of caramel sauce, but still great!) + bbq dusted house chips (spicy!)
  • Whiskey braised short ribs with apple cider + chipotle – really flavorful.
  • GF option – High west signature burger (bison/beef) with caramelized onion, subbed the roasted carrot, parsnip and celeriac for the side. This is an amazing combination. The burger was cooked perfectly, if you’re squeamish about having red/pink in the middle I would order it a little more well done than you usually would. You get a chunk of caramelized onions that are succulent and delicious. The side hash I got was also so good, especially when you took a bite with the onions and burger!!
  • Two orders of the High Country Chicken pot pie with wild mushrooms + root vegetables. Really good reviews – they said it wasn’t as heavy as normal chicken pot pies are. Great comfort food after a hard day on the slopes! (not GF.)

Grub Steak Restaurant

Came here on recommendation from yelp. The salad bar wasn’t “absolutely stellar” as many have said, but it is very good and does have many options. For entrees, our table had: Hunter’s mixed grill with elk sirloin, grub steak, and wild boar sausage (my favorite – all gluten free!), Elk sirloin with lingonberry jam (great flavors, matching sweet and savory – GF), Grub steak, Meatloaf and grub steak combination (not GF).

We all REALLY enjoyed our food. Only tip I would say is if you like your steaks a little more done, order the elk sirloin one level of doneness up from what you usually do. It’s a very lean meat. I usually get medium, and I ordered medium-well. It’s a LOT of food, so come hungry or take home leftovers. Don’t skip out on dessert! We had: the sampler trio (not GF) : vanilla bourbon bread pudding (rave reviews), creme brulée, and mud pie, and the flourless chocolate cake : (gluten free) is death by chocolate in a good way!

The servers were great. At one point we were all laughing so hard at whatever our conversation was, my mom and brother were both crying – so they did give us some funny looks, but made jokes about it.  Would definitely come back, especially for that wild boar sausage!

Collie’s Sports Bar and Grill

This was a new spot we hit on our trip this year – we had intended to go to Bandit’s (a BBQ place specializing in ribs that we’d gone to our three trips previously, only to find that it had closed!) so decided to keep with the sports bar/BBQ theme. We had all been craving ribs from talking about Bandit’s, and fully planned to order them at Collie’s…only to find out that they were all out of ribs. First world problems…but the burgers we all got ended up being delicious. I had the breakfast burger, which was easy to do gluten-free, with some coleslaw and veggies on the side. They do apparently have gluten-free buns, but I didn’t know that until after.

Squatters Roadhouse Grill

Cool atmosphere and great options on the menu for everyone…but honestly, underwhelming for me (though good for the fam – so we had a mixed experience). Gluten free, veggie and vegan options all marked! 3/4 dishes we had here were good – only the blue cheese and bacon burger fell flat. Pretty sure they had cooked up a bunch of burgers earlier in the day and just reheated this one, but it wasn’t hot at all when it got to the table the first time…or the second after we sent it back. I had the burger with bourbon-garlic caramelized onions + bacon and side salad with cilantro-lime vinaigrette, which was good! Mom had the 4 cheese Mac n cheese with andouille sausage (5 stars!) and brother had the bison burger, which he also really liked.

No Name Saloon & Grill

Really cool place downtown for burgers, bar food, and happy hour. It gets crowded during peak hours, but there is also a heated rooftop if you want to go up there! Know that even though it’s a restaurant, no one under 21 is allowed in. Sorry, kiddos! We actually only came here for happy hour, and I had a paloma, which was delicious. But the atmosphere was great – how can you beat a heated rooftop bar in the middle of winter on a sunny day?

Oishi Sushi Bar & Grill

Not a ton of GF options here (I know, strange for a sushi place) but the two things I did have, I loved. Wish I had brought some coconut aminos, since my stomach really hates even GF soy sauce. BUT. The special Sweet Baby Jesus roll was amazing, and I had a cucumber and salmon roll with avocado that was really good too. The servers were very accommodating to GF, but unfortunately, there just weren’t many options aside from what I ordered.

Atticus Coffee, Books, and Teahouse

Really cool place on main street. I love a good used book shop (or honestly, any place with books) – and this place not only has books, but tons of fun gag-style gifts, coffee, tea, smoothies, and baked goods. Highly recommend stopping in!

Loco Lizard Cantina

I’m only putting this one here because I want you to remember not to go there. It was a really underwhelming experience, so even though they have a 100% GF menu, it’s not worth it. There are so many other good places in town! Nothing really had much taste. On to the next one!

Bonus: Utah Olympic Park

Really cool place. Definitely do the tour – I don’t remember our guide’s name, but he was hilarious. Went to the top of the facility and got to see the international athletes getting ready for Sochi (when we were there before the 2018 Olympics) on the skeleton track, which was really cool! You also get to go to the middle of the track and watch as they fly by, go to the top of the ski jumps, and hear how the athletes train year round at the different facilities. The museum is really cool too. Definitely a must-see when you’re in Park City.

AND if you want the full-on experience, you can even go bobsledding while you’re there! Did this with a bachelorette party and it was so fun!

Red Iguana

Found this place through Food Network the first time we came out to Park City and I have been back there four times since. Three times with the fam, and once while out at a nutrition conference in the spring a few years ago. There are now THREE locations because the place has gotten so dang popular (and with good reason!) Both Red Iguana 1 and Red Iguana 2 are amazing. Haven’t tried the new one yet. The menu has markings on every item for gluten-free, vegetarian, and “adventurous”, which I love!

Plan when you go. One time, we got in around 11:30am on a Saturday after our flight, which was perfect timing. There was a line out the door by noon! We all started with margaritas and palomas (delicious)! The salsa and chips are fantastic. I had the cochinita pibil (shredded pork) with plantains again, because it was too good not to get!! Other table favorites were the huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, and huevos montulenos.  Love that they have gluten-free markings on the menu too. Will be back any time I’m in SLC!

Second (and third) times, here’s what we had (and loved):

  • Cochinita Pibil with plantains (GF)*
  • Mole Negro (GF with corn tortillas)
  • Fish Tacos (GF with corn tortillas)
  • Mango Enchiladas
  • Huevos Motulenos

Special shoutout to the cochinita pibil. I’ve had this every single time I’ve been to any of the Red Iguana restaurants because it is literally so good I refuse to order anything else.

PS – RIP to Bandit’s Grill and Bar (which had the best ribs in town) and No Worries Café and Grill (breakfast place that I found on the Food Network), both formerly in Park City, which have both closed in the last few years.

And yes, this was totally on our Christmas card one year. You’re welcome.
